SEO and Metadata

The SEO tab on every FlipBook lets you control how the FlipBook appears in Google results, what shows when its URL is shared on social media, and whether search engines should index it at all. This article covers every option, plus when to install the SEO Addon for advanced features.

Where the SEO settings live

Per FlipBook:

  1. Open the FlipBook for editing.
  2. Switch to the SEO tab.
  3. Two groups: Search Engine and Social Sharing.

Search Engine settings

SEO Title

What appears as the title in Google search results.

  • Default: the FlipBook's title (from the title field at the top of the editor).
  • Override: type a custom title for SEO purposes. Useful when the SEO-optimized title is different from the visible title.

Tip: keep under 60 characters — Google truncates longer titles.

Meta Description

The snippet shown under the title in search results.

  • Default: empty (Google generates its own snippet from the page content).
  • Override: write a custom 150-160 character description.

Tip: include your primary keyword and a clear value proposition. This is your sales pitch in search results.

Search Visibility

Two options:

  • Index (default) — search engines can crawl and index the FlipBook URL.
  • Noindex — tells search engines to skip this FlipBook entirely. Useful for private content or duplicate FlipBooks.

Important: Noindex doesn't make the URL private — it just hides it from search engines. To restrict viewing access, use WooCommerce gating or the User & Role Access Addon.

Canonical URL

When the same FlipBook appears on multiple URLs (e.g. embedded on several pages), tell search engines which URL is the "official" one.

  • Default: empty (uses the FlipBook's own URL).
  • Override: type the canonical URL.

This prevents duplicate-content penalties.

Social Sharing settings

Social Image (Open Graph Image)

The image shown when the FlipBook URL is shared on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.

  1. Click Select Image.
  2. Pick an image from the media library or upload a new one.
  3. Save.

Recommended size: 1200x630 pixels (Facebook's preferred Open Graph image size).

Default if not set:

  1. The FlipBook's Featured Image (set in the publish sidebar).
  2. If no Featured Image, the FlipBook's cover (first page).
  3. If neither, the share preview is plain text.

What's automatic (no setup needed)

Even without filling out the SEO tab, every FlipBook URL has basic SEO out of the box:

  • <title> — uses the FlipBook title.
  • <meta name="description"> — uses the meta description if set.
  • <link rel="canonical"> — points to the FlipBook URL.
  • Open Graph tagsog:title, og:url, og:image, og:type, og:description.
  • Twitter Card tagstwitter:card, twitter:title, twitter:description, twitter:image.

SEO best practices for FlipBooks

1. Set a clear page title and meta description

Don't rely on the auto-generated description. Write a specific, keyword-rich snippet that earns the click in search results.

2. Use a Featured Image

Even if you don't customize the Social Image, having a Featured Image set means social-share previews look polished instead of plain.

3. Don't bury important content in the FlipBook only

By default, search engines can index the FlipBook URL itself but cannot read inside the PDF. So if you only put important text inside the FlipBook, search engines can't find it.

Solutions:

  • Add a text summary above or below the embedded FlipBook on the page where it's hosted. Search engines index that summary.
  • Install the SEO Addon — it extracts the full text of your PDF and renders it as crawlable HTML alongside the visual FlipBook. Visitors see the FlipBook; bots see the text.

4. Use Noindex sparingly

A FlipBook with Noindex is invisible to search engines but still accessible via direct URL. Use it for:

  • Private internal documents.
  • Duplicate FlipBooks (same content on multiple URLs — use canonical instead in that case).
  • WIP content you're not ready to surface yet.

Don't Noindex your main marketing FlipBook just because you're afraid of duplicate content.

5. Canonical URLs for popups

If you embed the same FlipBook as a popup on 10 different pages, all 10 pages may include the FlipBook URL. Set a canonical pointing to the FlipBook's primary URL (or the page where you want it indexed) to avoid duplicates.

Going further: the SEO Addon

The free SEO settings above cover the basics. For full AI-search and traditional-SEO optimization, install the SEO Addon. It adds:

  • Text extraction — full PDF text rendered as crawlable HTML so search engines and AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) can index every word.
  • Structured data (JSON-LD)Article, Book, and WebPage schema with author, publisher, and image metadata. Includes speakable for voice assistants.
  • Sitemap integration — FlipBook URLs added to your XML sitemap.
  • llms.txt — automatically generated file at yoursite.com/llms.txt so AI systems understand your FlipBook catalog.
  • More social preview controls — separate fields for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn.
  • Per-FlipBook robots controls — meta robots tags (noindex, nofollow, etc.) per FlipBook.

If FlipBooks are a core part of your content strategy, the SEO Addon usually pays for itself.

Working with traditional SEO plugins

TNC FlipBook 3D plays nicely with Yoast, Rank Math, AIOSEO, and other SEO plugins:

  • The FlipBook custom post type appears in your SEO plugin's settings — enable indexing and configure default metadata there.
  • When you set a meta description in our SEO tab, it can conflict with the SEO plugin's own meta. Usually our plugin wins because the SEO tab is more specific. Confirm by viewing source on the FlipBook URL.
  • Open Graph tags: only one plugin should emit them. Disable our Open Graph (if needed) by keeping the Social Image field empty and let your SEO plugin emit OG tags from the Featured Image.

Working with AI search

AI search engines (ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude.ai, Google AI Overviews, Bing Copilot) cite web content based on what they can crawl. Their crawlers behave like search engines:

  • They can index the FlipBook URL and its visible meta tags.
  • They cannot read inside the PDF without text extraction.
  • They give weight to structured data (Article, WebPage, speakable).
  • They look for llms.txt files that map a site's content.

To maximize AI search visibility, install the SEO Addon — it handles text extraction, schema, and llms.txt in one step.

Verifying your FlipBook in search

  1. Submit the URL to Google Search Console — go to URL Inspection and paste the FlipBook URL.
  2. Click Request Indexing — Google adds it to the crawl queue.
  3. Within hours to days, Google indexes the FlipBook URL.
  4. Search for your title in Google to confirm it appears.

For social preview verification:

If the preview looks wrong, fix the SEO tab settings and click Re-fetch in the debugger.

Troubleshooting

Google doesn't show my FlipBook in search results.

  • Confirm Search Visibility is set to Index (not Noindex).
  • Submit the URL via Google Search Console (above).
  • Be patient — new URLs can take 1-7 days to index.
  • Check that your robots.txt isn't blocking /flipbook/.

Social shares show the wrong image.

  • Set a Social Image explicitly under SEO.
  • Use Facebook's Sharing Debugger to refresh Facebook's cache.
  • Twitter and LinkedIn cache similarly — use their debuggers to refresh.

Meta description doesn't appear in Google results. Google doesn't always use the meta description you provide; sometimes it generates one from the page. If yours is short, generic, or doesn't match the query, Google may substitute its own.

My SEO plugin shows different metadata than what I set on the FlipBook. SEO plugins often have their own per-post fields. Check those fields (in the FlipBook editor — the SEO plugin adds its own metabox). The two systems can conflict. Decide which one is authoritative for each FlipBook.
